Chapter Eight

“We should get back up to the house,” she said, pushing herself off his lap as he was lost in thought.

He still wanted to grab her and bring her back into his lap, but she was right—the boys, the dogs, the rest of his work were all out there.

Tucker got to his feet, re-zipping and buttoning his jeans and brushing the barn floor dirt off of his ass.

“After we check on the boys, can you help me bring some of my stuff down here?” she asked.

“Of course.” Typically, he would have suggested they get the boys to help unload her stuff, but he wanted more time to talk to her alone.

They headed up to the house. The boys were still wet, but everyone—dogs and kids alike—were devoid of mud and cow manure.

“Tell you what,” he said to the boys. “There’s apples and peanut butter and bread in the house, or my mom has turkey sandwiches, salad and cookies.”

“Cookies!” Jack and David said at the same time.

“You heard the salad part right?” Tucker asked.

“Oh, David and Charlie are allergic to salad,” Delaney said.

“Is that right?” Tucker smiled.

“Oh, yeah, it makes their faces scrunch up really ugly and this horrible sound come out of their mouths.” She grabbed Charlie from behind, hugging him while she mimicked an I’m-gonna-be-sick expression and a loud, whiny, drawn-out ewwww sound.

Tucker chuckled even as his chest felt tighter watching them.

“I want turkey sandwiches,” Jack said.

“I want her lemonade,” Henry said.

“Oh, yeah!” David agreed.

“Okay, you guys head over there. You can take the four-wheelers,” Tucker said.

And his getting rid of the boys really was not so he could get Delaney naked. He wasn’t going to get her naked. At least not until tonight when he had her in the back of his truck and some Booze in her system. He wanted her to let go, loosen up, have some fun. He was hoping to take the edge off of this seemingly constant need of hers to be in charge.

“Four-wheelers?” Delaney asked.

Tucker glanced at her. “Henry and Charlie are really good on them.”

“Are there helmets?” She was frowning.

“There can be,” Tucker agreed. He and his brothers hadn’t worn helmets four-wheeling as kids but that didn’t mean it wasn’t a good idea.

“Oh, come on,” Charlie complained.

“Well, you don’t have to,” Tucker told them. “But if you don’t want to wear helmets, I’ll take you over in the truck.”

The path between his place and his mom and dad’s was a straight shot across the pasture and would take only a few minutes on the four wheelers. The boys knew the way and there was absolutely nothing perilous between here and there, but he definitely respected Delaney’s need to know they were safe.

“Fine,” Charlie said. “I’ll wear it.”

“Okay. Text me when you get there,” he told Henry.

“Sure.”

“And change into dry clothes,” Delaney called as they started running toward the shed where the four-wheelers were housed.

They all groaned, but they did stop and trudge back to the house, grumbling but compliant.
